Gov. Greg Abbott on Tuesday said Texas is a leader in higher education and touted the investments the Legislature made in "transformative" community college funding.
Abbott, who spoke at the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s annual Higher EDge conference, said the state has been focused on meeting workforce demands through education, which has helped attract big employers. He said company CEOs with whom he speaks don't care about the ideology of the higher education institutions, but rather the quality of instruction.
"There's been none of them who have asked me, 'What is the ideological bent of what is being taught in our universities? How are students being indoctrinated?’ ” he said. “The reason why I mentioned this is because there have been issues at universities in the state of Texas that show a level of indoctrination that is hindering what your primary focus should be."
